This time it goes out to Recreation Integration Victoria (RIV). This is the parent company of my previous post, Disabled Sailing, and part of a partnership between Recreation Integration Victoria, the Victoria Integrations Society (VIS) and the Disabled Sailing Association of BC (DSABC, Victoria). This summer, to pay off some school debt I will be heading back to DSA to work as a sailing instructor for the summer. Part of the deal with that is we all head up to Easter Seals Camp Shawnigan for a night to have a company retreat and get to know the summer staff working with RIV, VIS and DSABC. On this trip, we decided to take Faye, our administrative guru, for a hike up the mountain behind the camp.

With Faye’s disability, we used BC Mobility Opportunity Societies (BCMOS) newly designed TrailRider. The TrailRider is a single-wheeled, off-road, four-handled chair. It’s original design came from Sam Sullivan in the early 1990s, and first model produced in 1995. BCMOS redesigned this invention in 2005 and since then it has taken people along the rugged west coast trail (link) and up above the clouds to the base camp of Mt. Everest (link). The pictures featured in this post are of this newly designed TrailRider on a fairly moderate trail.

Really nice, Matt … I like the perspective of these a lot, and the descriptive really adds.
Is Sam Sullivan that you refer to the past mayor of Vancouver?
Somehow I can’t help but be envious that you’ll be ‘working’ as a sailing instructor this summer.
Thanks Adriana! Yes, it is the same Sam Sullivan that I am refering to.
